Chinese Shakespeare

Although Singapore would have to wait until the early 1980s for its first full-length Chinese-language adaptation of Shakespeare, in 1948, a film version of Hamlet starring Laurence Olivier was translated into Chinese and screened at the Cathay cinema (pictured), becoming an unlikely hit in post-war Singapore’s cinema scene.
